Guest Lecture: ‘Globalization of Infectious Diseases: Lessons from Ebola Outbreaks’ by Dr. Lul Raka, Expert of Infectious Diseases and Health Policy

March 6, 2017

Lul RakaOn Thursday, March 2nd, RIT Kosovo™ (A.U.K) hosted a guest lecture with Dr. Lul Raka, Professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Prishtina and Expert of Infectious Diseases and Health Policy. Dr. Raka delivered a lecture on the topic “Globalization of Infectious Diseases: Lessons from Ebola Outbreaks” with a focus on his personal experience volunteering in Liberia.

His presentation drew on his experience with infectious diseases, including Ebola and Zika outbreaks, health funding, public health policy, and his work in Kosovo and Liberia. He explained the lessons learned during the Ebola outbreak in Africa stating that countries with weak health care systems can’t seem to withstand such major outbreaks. Dr. Raka added that preparedness to treat the first confirmed cases should be a national emergency and all control measures must be coordinated together. He listed community engagement as the main factor in contribution of success in defeating infectious diseases such as Ebola. To illustrate his point, Dr. Raka gave several examples of the Ebola epidemic, including his own personal experience as a volunteer with WHO Mission in Liberia.

Dr. Raka also discussed the public health policy in Kosovo by highlighting similarities and differences that can be found with other countries. He pointed out that although the policy systems might be different, the similarities are rooted in human care and volunteerism, noting that with the proper channels it is possible to share information and support each other. Today global travel has heightened the vulnerability of the distribution of infectious diseases worldwide. Therefore, the lessons learned from Dr. Raka can serve as awareness for disease symptoms and transmission modes which are crucial during any possible outbreaks.

Students were impressed by the presentation of Dr. Raka, noting that the topic was interesting and it inspired them to get informed further about infectious diseases and health policy control prevention systems and programs. It was a privilege to learn directly from a person with a wealth of fascinating experience and expertise. We would like to thank Dr. Lul Raka for his willingness to share his experience with the RIT Kosovo™ (A.U.K) students.
