What We Are Reading...

Robin Winks and Joan Neuberger - Europe and the Making of Modernity: 1815 – 1910, Oxford University, 2005.
The 19th Century has always been a favorite of mine. This insightful overview of the period sets the stage for WW I and it fills in many blanks left by standard history texts for this period and is very well written. Perhaps there is nothing entirely new in it, but the authors make some interesting connections, such as the role that the spread of newspapers made in establishing national languages out of the various dialects that were common in 1815 and how that played into the nationalism of the time.
